Ohio University Press and Paper Moon Art Studio invite parents, educators, counselors, and childcare providers to an interactive how-to workshop on incorporating choice-based art into their own routines. Kristen Marra Marek of the play-based Paper Moon Art Studio and Katherine Ziff, author of Artbreak: A Creative Guide for Joyful and Productive Classrooms, will introduce ArtBreak, an easy, minimal time commitment, inexpensive program of child-directed, choice-based art making that any caregiver or teacher can implement. ArtBreak has been tested over five years in Ohio elementary schools, with proven emotional benefits for children.
The afternoon will start with an overview of the ArtBreak program and how to implement it. Ziff, a former school counselor and practicing artist who now teaches counseling at Wake Forest University, will discuss her research into the science of play, artmaking, and their impact on emotional health. Marek, who founded Paper Moon in 2015, will speak from her experience leading a choice-based art studio for all ages, as well as from her longtime involvement with early childhood education in Columbus.
Then, the fun begins! Participants will get to enjoy play and artmaking with materials from the span of the expressive therapies continuum, including fingerpaint, watercolors on wet paper, collage, and construction. They will leave with specific guidelines for incorporating more choice-based art into their lives and those of the children they care for, and a solid grounding in the scientific evidence for the benefits.
